31st March 2021 - Matthew 27:45-46

Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, 'Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?', that is,

'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?'.

Reflection on the Painting

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.

Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

The sky is so dark. As You die, the scene around you is chaotic. Your Mother is by Your side. So many onlookers. A man is running away and beating his breast. The Pharisees look content. The soldiers, ready to pierce your side. My Jesus, what inhuman physical suffering You endure!

Today, I pray for us seminarians. Jesus, help us to embrace death too, for we must die to self in order to be reborn in You. By dying on the cross, You taught us how the loss of life is necessary for gaining new life and being free. Help us move from the slavery of our self-efforts to the freedom of salvation.

As we gaze upon You, help us to die to self during our seminary years, so we can bear witness to the love we hold for You in this precious earthly life.

Our Father, who art in heaven…

Hail Mary, full of grace…

Glory Be to the Father and to the Son…

(Normal Gospel reading for the day: Matthew 26:14-25)
