Letter: The Transforming Power of Faith

(Re: Ian Linden: Catholics and social cohesion - dealing with Islamophobia - Jul 25th, 2026)

Dear Professor Linden,

Thank you for your thoughtful and highly considered article...... I very much appreciated your balanced and courageous reflection on Islamophobia, social cohesion, and the place of Muslims within British society. Your appeal to both Government and the Church come at an important moment.

I agree with you that the long-standing stalemate between successive Governments and the Muslim Council of Britain should now come to an end. Sixteen years of official non-engagement has served neither the Government nor British Muslims well. It is difficult to see how meaningful integration can be strengthened while one of the country's largest representative Muslim bodies remains excluded from constructive dialogue. Governments should not deal with minority communities through prolonged disengagement. Differences and disagreements are inevitable in a democracy, but they are best addressed through respectful engagement rather than isolation. Genuine partnership builds trust, encourages accountability, and strengthens our shared commitment to the common good.

I also found your comparison with the historical experience of Catholics in Britain particularly powerful. It reminds us that today's religious communities can learn from one another's struggles and stand together against prejudice in all its forms. Your call for the Church to continue demonstrating friendship and solidarity with Muslims is both timely and deeply encouraging.

Thank you again for your principled and thoughtful contribution. I hope your advice to the new Prime Minister is heard and acted upon, for the benefit of both British Muslims and the wider society we all share.

With warm regards,
