Cinema Paradiso at Farm Street Film Club

The wonderful film: Cinema Paradiso is showing this Thursday, 30 July, at the Tim Hetherington Film Club at Farm Street in the Arrupe Hall at 6.30 for 7pm. Cost: no charge, free refreshments but donations are welcome

Written and directed by Giuseppe Tornatore, Cinema Paradiso is a 1988 coming-of-age comedy drama that has been credited as revitalizing the Italian film industry. Set in a small Sicilian town, the film centres on the friendship between a young boy and an aging projectionist who works at the titular movie theatre.

The film has been cited as one of the greatest films of all time and a world cinema classic. In 1989 it won the Academy award for Best Foreign Language Film, the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival and eleven BAFTA awards which was a record for a foreign language film until this was broken by 'All Quiet on the Western Front' in 2023.

On Thursday 27 August and following the Feast of St Ignatius on Friday 31 July, the Farm Street Film Club will at last show the subtitled 2016 film (1 hour 58 minutes), 'Ingatio de Loyola, soldier, sinner, saint: if you could hear the voice of God, would you keep it a secret?'
