Catholic Days of Nonviolence
'Walking together builds Unity and Nonviolence' is the theme for the 2024 Catholic Days of Nonviolence which will run between 21 September and 2 October. This is a global initiative of Pax Christi International.
On 29 September in Rome, the Catholic Institute for Nonviolence will be launched with speakers including Cardinal Charles Maung Bo of Myanmar; Sr Wamũyũ Teresia Wachira, IBVM, Kenya; Cardinal Robert McElroy, California, USA; Dr Maria Stephan, author, researcher and speaker on the effectiveness of nonviolence. The Institute aims to strengthen the theological, pastoral, strategic, and experiential foundations of active nonviolence and provide essential support to the emerging discipline of nonviolence studies around the world.
On the same day, Pax Christi International will give its 2023 Peace Award to the Parents Circle - Families Forum, a joint Israeli-Palestinian organisation of over 700 families, all of whom have lost an immediate family member to the ongoing conflict.
The event, in real time at 16.00 CET, will also be broadcast live.
On Wednesday 2 October in London from 2 - 4pm Pax Christi England and Wales is organising a pilgrimage starting at the Edith Cavell statue, Trafalgar Square, and stopping to leave messages at the Ministry of Defence, Downing Street, Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Westminster Cathedral. The walk/pilgrimage combines advocacy and spirituality. Government departments and our own Church will be urged to invest in nonviolent peacemaking initiatives. There will be prayers and readings at each stop.
The walk is inspired by Pope Francis's words to young people:
"Walk together with others, colour the world with your creativity, and paint the streets of life with the Gospel."
