Letter from Radio Maria
Fr Toby Lees OP, Priest Director of Radio Maria writes:
Mother Teresa, that great saint whose feast was Thursday, but whose death was largely hidden by that of Princess Diana, was once invited to give the commencement address at Harvard University. She began by reading their invitation to her, which said something like this: 'We invite you, Mother Teresa, as the most well-known citizen of India, one of the poorest countries in the world to share your wisdom with us here in America, one of the richest countries in the world.' And Mother said, 'That's just not true. India is not a poor country. India is a rich country. India has many kinds of spiritual riches. And America is not a rich country. America is a poor country. Any country that slaughters its own unborn children is a desperately poor country.' As for America, so too, for England.
I am pleased that last May, as part of our Mariathon, we were able to share many Indian spiritual riches with you. In our Mariathon this October one of the three days will be devoted to looking at the spiritual riches of this country both past and present. I am also delighted that we have recently started a monthly pro-life programme with our friends Isabel and Ben at March for Life UK, who work tirelessly throughout the year to defend the lives of the hidden unborn. I invite all of you to join Isabel, Ben, me, many of our volunteers and staff, and thousands more, at the March for Life in London this Saturday 7th September. The March begins at 1.30pm at the Emmanuel Centre, and there is also a Catholic Mass at St George's Catholic Cathedral Southwark at 11am.
We're delighted to have the means to shine a light on the good work of Isabel and Ben and so many other amazing defenders of the faith, defenders of the poor and most vulnerable. However, we cannot do this without your support, without your prayers and donations. We really need to have more steady income, and so I'd ask you in this month of endings and beginnings, whether there is something that you might sacrifice in order that you might give. One of our supporters cancelled her Netflix, another his Guardian subscription. What might you give up in order that you might give?
God bless
Fr Toby Lees OP
