No justice in 'earned settlement' - refugees face decades in limbo

People who have already endured war, persecution and forced displacement could now face decades more uncertainty under the Government's new 'earned settlement' policy.

The proposals would force many refugees to wait 20 years or more before they can settle permanently in the UK, delaying their ability to build stable lives, reunite families, and contribute fully to the communities they call home. Jesuit Refugee Service UK (JRS UK) believes the policy risks deepening exclusion and hardship rather than offering the safety and security that refugees need to recover and thrive.

Dr Sophie Cartwright, senior policy officer with JRS UK commented: "The Government's 'earned settlement' policy, published this week, will force refugees to wait up to 20, or even 30 years before they can finally settle in the UK. It punishes people who have been forced to make dangerous journeys and denies people seeking sanctuary a chance to rebuild their lives here.

Furthermore, refugees forced into debt and destitution after accessing essential asylum support will be punished for this. The Government says this is fairness but there is no justice here."
