JRS director urges Catholic finance leaders to stand in solidarity with refugees

Dr Ryall addresses conference
Dr David Ryall, Director of Jesuit Refugee Service UK (JRS UK), called for solidarity with refugees and a renewed commitment to Christian welcome during his opening keynote speech at the Association of Provincial Bursars (APB) Conference, held in Hertfordshire from 5 to 7 October.
Addressing representatives of religious congregations, Dr Ryall highlighted the challenges facing people seeking sanctuary in the UK and the vital role Catholic organisations play in offering practical assistance, friendship and support.
His address, 'Refugees & Migration in the UK: A Catholic response to people seeking sanctuary', outlined the work of JRS UK, which accompanies, serves and advocates for refugees and people seeking asylum, including those facing destitution and exclusion.
Dr Ryall emphasised the importance of recognising the dignity and humanity of people seeking sanctuary, drawing attention to the hidden injuries caused by a broken asylum system and the divisive language of an increasingly hostile public debate about migration. He also paid tribute to the contribution of religious congregations, many of which work alongside JRS UK in offering practical assistance, friendship and pastoral support to people seeking sanctuary.
Reflecting on the responsibilities of those working within Catholic organisations, he said: "You help communities discern how their resources can best serve the mission of the Church. You help turn generosity into something practical and sustainable."
The event also included a panel discussion with people supported by JRS UK and members of its frontline teams, exploring the impact of hostile asylum policies, anti-refugee violence and growing pressures on charities. The discussion also highlighted reasons for hope, including the support offered by Catholic communities and religious congregations through volunteering, fundraising and advocacy.
The annual APB Conference brought together bursars and other professionals responsible for the financial and administrative affairs of religious congregations. Established in 1982, the Association promotes collaboration, professional development and the responsible stewardship of resources in support of the Church's mission.
Among the contributors was Richard Saunders, a member of the Jesuits in Britain Investment Committee, who co-presented a session entitled 'The Impact of an Investment Policy (with personal experiences and examples)', alongside Suzanne Keogh of Davy Wealth Management. The programme also covered employment and immigration law, overseas grants, risk management and ethical investment.
Fr Keith McMillan SJ, Province Treasurer for Jesuits in Britain and a member of the APB Executive Committee, highlighted the importance of bringing together those responsible for the practical work that enables religious communities to fulfil their mission. He said: "The APB brings together members of religious congregations and the professionals who support their work. These are people responsible for getting things done, whether dealing with property, charity law, visa applications, insurance, ethical investment or a multitude of other practical matters.
"The breadth of knowledge and experience in the room is humbling. The cooperation and mutual support are invaluable, particularly as many of those involved work in relative isolation for much of the year."
