JPIC conference on the impact of mining on people and land

Beneath the surface: the impact of mining on people and land - JPIC Linking Day (Justice, Peace, and the Integrity of Creation) will take place on Saturday 10th October 2026, 10am (Coffee/Tea) - 4.15 pm (Concluding with the Eucharist). This will be a hybrid conference, on zoom and in person.

Facilitator: Richard Solly

Richard has been involved in community struggles against extractive industries since 1989. He helped set up London Mining Network in 2007 and co-ordinated its work for sixteen years. In 2024-5, he was involved with the Jesuit mining network. He is a member of the Community of the Passion, part of the Passionist family in the Catholic Church.

Speakers: Dr Diana Salazar and Dr Séverine Deneulin

Diana has worked as Latin America Coordinator at the London Mining Network. For 17 years she has worked in projects involving education, and research with grassroots communities in many countries. Diana has worked with communities impacted by British linked mining companies and has focused on research and advocacy around mining waste and the energy transition. She teaches the seminar Extractivism, Architecture and Climate Justice at UCL.

Séverine is Acting Director of the Laudato Si' Research Institute and Associate Fellow at the Oxford Department of International Development. She researches on the intersection between development studies and the Catholic social tradition. She is currently working on the role of the Catholic Church in promoting integral ecology in the context of mining.
