Fitzcarraldo at Farm Street Film Club

There's a chance to see Werner Herzog's award-winning 'Fitzcarraldo' at the Tim Hetherington Film Club this Thursday, 28 May.
The 1982 movie stars Klaus Kinski as an Irish would-be rubber baron, known in Peru as Fitzcarraldo, who is determined to transport a derelict steamship over a mountain in the Amazon rainforest and thereby access a rich rubber territory with the ultimate goal of … wait for it …using the wealth to build an opera house in the area. Totally bizarre and utterly captivating.
Although famously suffering one of the most troubled production processes in cinematic history, at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival, Werner Herzog won the award for Best Director and the film was nominated for the Palm D'Or. The film received widespread positive reviews from critics, being described by one as 'imperfect but transcendent'. Come and see for yourself!
'Fitzcarraldo' will be screened in the Arrupe Hall at the London Jesuit Centre, 6.30 for 7pm on Thursday 28 May 2026
There is no charge, refreshments are free - but donations are welcome.
(On Thursday 25 June, prior to celebrating the Feast of St Ignatius on Friday 31 July, the Farm Street Film Club will (at last) show the subtitled 2016 film (1 hour 58 minutes), 'Ingatio de Loyola, soldier, sinner, saint: if you could hear the voice of God, would you keep it a secret?' )
