Film: Project Hail Mary

  • Helena Judd

In this week's Culture Tuesday on Radio Maria England, Helena returns from her Easter break with a rich and reflective review of the new science fiction film Project Hail Mary, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, starring Ryan Gosling and based on the novel by Andy Weir.

Blending cinema, faith and personal reflection, Project Hail Mary follows Ryland Grace, a reluctant astronaut who wakes up alone aboard a spacecraft with no memory of how he got there. As fragments of his memory return, he discovers he is on a mission that could determine the survival of Earth itself, taking him on a journey far beyond anything he ever expected.

Rather than functioning as a straightforward space thriller, the film gradually reveals itself as a deeply human story about friendship, discovery and survival. At its heart is Grace's unexpected bond with an alien companion he names Rocky, a relationship that becomes central to both the emotional weight and narrative drive of the film.

Visually, the film offers a striking depiction of deep space and distant worlds, balancing moments of awe and beauty with tension and isolation. Alongside this spectacle are quieter, more reflective themes that explore identity, memory and purpose, grounding the story in a very human search for meaning.

The character of Grace, a flawed but deeply curious scientist and teacher, is shaped by the mission he is called to undertake. This invites a wider reflection on the idea of grace itself, understood in the Catholic sense as a gift that precedes us, sustains us and enables us to respond freely when we are called. In this way, the film naturally opens up questions about freedom, trust, sacrifice and hope, resonating strongly with themes of renewal and resurrection.

Thoughtful, engaging and often surprising, Project Hail Mary offers a fresh perspective that works both as compelling science fiction and as a quiet spiritual reflection on what it means to be given a mission and to say yes.
