1 February marks not only the start of Spring but a day where we reflect on not only the life and history of a saint but the amazing women in our lives.St Brigid's Day has long symbolised hope, renewal and the feminine, and her story tells of her courage and compassion for those without power and on the margins. Even as a child, Brigid was kind and generous to those around her, and she was brave, speaking out against injustices and defending the weak.

Her tales of magic and ruses to escape forced marriage, her command of nature, and the famous growing cloak are all shadowed by Brigid's real power, which was kindness and standing in solidarity with those most in need.

That kindness is a light in the darkness and can only shine brighter and brighter when we come together.
Like Spring pushing back the dark of winter and nature returning to life, St Brigid's day is a new breath of life for nature and the soul.

One lovely tradition that binds spirituality with Mother Nature is Brigid's intention tree. Sometimes called a "Clootie Tree" or "Rag Tree," it is a long-standing Irish tradition associated with Ireland's woman saint. These trees, usually located beside the saint's holy wells, are used by pilgrims to leave prayers, intentions, and tokens of gratitude.

The Oak, especially, is connected to Brigid, symbolising strength, wisdom and endurance. In some stories, the location of Brigid's abbey in Kildare was chosen because of an Oak with strong and large branches to provide shelter for all who sought refuge.

Today, at IJI, we are launching a new gift - a tree. Whether to plant a tree to remember a loved one or share a meaningful gift with a friend, for €15, you can provide a smallholder farmer in Malawi with 10 fruit and forestry trees, supporting nutrition, income, and land restoration. With your support, farmers can bring food to the table, restore landscapes affected by deforestation, and build resilience to climate change.
