New Hall School celebrates jazz-Infused St Cecilia Concert

  • Nicola Dunn

New Hall School in Chelmsford hosted an exceptional St Cecilia Concert, delighting a packed audience in its historic Chapel with an evening of musical excellence. For the first time since the School's founding in 1642, the entire programme was unified by a distinctive jazz influence, marking a significant and memorable moment in the School's cultural calendar.

This annual concert honours St Cecilia, who is recognised as the patron saint of music, celebrated for her deep faith and her belief in the spiritual power of music.

Mr Andrew Fardell, Deputy Principal, commented: "This year's St Cecilia Concert was a powerful celebration of the creativity, discipline and joy that music brings to our School community. Our students performed with confidence and flair, and it was inspiring to see a programme so distinctively shaped by jazz, showcasing the students' musical maturity."

The first half of the concert included a series of instrumental ensembles. The Junior Orchestra opened with a rhythmic and polished performance of Take Five. This was followed by the Brass Ensemble's expressive arrangements of Just a Closer Walk and The Londonderry Air. The Jazz Initiative then took centre stage, presenting a dynamic selection of jazz standards, ranging from Chattanooga Choo Choo to Prince's Thieves in the Temple. The Senior Orchestra concluded the first half with two sophisticated medleys of jazz classics.

The second half celebrated vocal excellence, with the Chamber Choir showcasing a variety of a cappella jazz arrangements. The concert culminated with the Senior Choir's spirited performance of Bob Chilcott's A Little Jazz Mass, performed in honour of the composer's 70th birthday.

The School was delighted to welcome family members, Governors and guests, whose enthusiasm and support added wonderfully to the atmosphere of the occasion.
