Westminster, Southwark and Brentwood schools celebrate excellent GCSE results

The waiting is over. On Thursday, Catholic schools across the UK received their GCSE exam results and once again have done very well. Here's some of the results from schools in the London dioceses of Brentwood, Southwark and Westminster.
St Ursula's Secondary School, Greenwich
St Ursula's students achieved exceptionally good results. Headteacher Mark O'Shaughnessy commented: "We are incredibly proud of our students and everything they have achieved. Today's results are a wonderful celebration of our students' dedication, success and support for one another. This year's results demonstrate a clear improvement in the progress students are making from their individual starting points. Compared with previous years, students have made stronger progress throughout their time at the school, reflecting the impact of high-quality teaching, targeted academic support and the commitment shown by both students and staff. This represents an important step forward for the school and provides a strong foundation on which to build in the years ahead."
Results were strong across the board, but some individual subject areas shone, with the English Department achieving 89% at grade 4 or higher, the Computer Science Department achieving 83% at grade 4 or higher, Maths achieving 75% at grade 4 or higher, and Religious Education achieving 80% at grade 4 or higher.
A number of departments also gained excellent grades at the highest levels, such as English with 37% achieving grades 7-9, French with 64% achieving grades 7-9, Chemistry and Physics with 50% achieving grades 7-9, and History with 41% achieving grades 7-9.

Douay Martyrs Catholic School, Ickenham
Douay Martyrs is celebrating a year of excellent GCSE results with a fith of students achieving the highest grades of 9-7. There were several notable individual successes across a range of subjects including Specalist Science students of which 75% achieved grades 9-8 and a fith of RE grades at 9-8. We are incredibly proud that the schools achievements show year on year improvement, with this cohort of year 11 achieving our highest results in a number of years.
Against the national average, maths was 66% in grades 9-4, with Douay achieving 81% of this. In English, we also had 85 % our pupils achieve grades 9-4, once again higher than the national average. The school is especially proud of outcomes in business studies, computer science, geography and RE, where a third of students achieved the highest grades.
Congratulations to all students and their families. The majority of students are expected to continue their education at the school's Sixth Form, which offers a wide range of A Level and vocational courses and has a higher percentage than the national average of students gaining entry to Russell Group universities each year.
Headteacher, Fiona McCloskey, was full of praise for the hard work demonstrated by the Year 11 students, commenting: "Congratulations to all our students on their results and hard work. Every student who walked into the exam hall gave their very best, and today we celebrate that. What stands out to me isn't just the grades, but the character these students have shown, the way they have supported one another, pushed themselves, and represented our school with pride. I have watched them grow, and I couldn't be more delighted for them.
"Among the top performers this year was Rose, who achieved grades 9-8 in core subjects: "I'm really happy with my results. The support from my teachers and friends helped me to stay focused and overcome many challenges during the year. I'm proud of what I'vachieved and excited to see what comes next."
Another high-achieving student, Ubaid, who achieved grades 9-7 in code subjects, said: "The Douay Martyrs has pushed me to be the best version of myself, both in and out of the classroom. I'm happy with my results and decided to stay on for Sixth Form because I know the teachers, the school, and the high standards we work towards. I'm confident that I can continue to excel at A Level, and perhaps do even better."
The Douay Martyrs Catholic Secondary School continues to build on its reputation as an aspirational, inclusive, Christ-centred community rooted in faith and love. Cardinal Pole Catholic School, Hackney
Cardinal Pole Catholic School in Hackney, 2024 School of the Year, is proud to announce another spectacular set of GCSE results. Executive Headteacher, Adam Hall, said, "What a result! I couldn't be prouder of this year group and everything they have achieved. These fantastic outcomes are the reward for years of determination, resilience and hard work, supported every step of the way by dedicated staff and incredibly supportive families. Today is a celebration not only of excellent grades, but of the compassionate, ambitious and respectful young people our students have become."
Results were strong throughout the school, but some individual subject areas shone. 70% students secured at least a grade 4 in English and Maths and nearly half of the cohort achieved grade 5 or higher in these subjects. In Biology, Chemistry and Physics, 79% students secured a Grade 5 or above.
A number of departments also gained excellent grades at the highest levels, such as: three quarters of all 3D Design grades securing 7+ and nearly 20% cohort also securing these top grades in Maths.
Head of School, Alex O'Donoghue, commented, "Today's results reflect so much more than academic success. Seven students were awarded the highest grades of 7+ in all their GCSES including Siarra and Favour. Highlights from other individual students include: Blesslo who secured 5 grade 9s and 4 others at 7 or above; Emily who secured 4 Grade 9s and 5 more at 7 or above and Ayomide, Joshua and Jean-Chris who secured 3 grade 9s and 6 others at grade 7 or above.
Ruya said, "I'm so proud of my results! I can't wait to study Philosophy, Sociology and Politics at Cardinal Pole Sixth Form. Thank you to all my teachers but especially Ms Hasstrup and Mr Tavares!"

St Bonaventure's, Newham
Year 11 Students and members of staff at St Bonaventure's celebrated one of the best GCSE results in recent years, with many students achieving top grades and others showing great determination to secure strong exam outcomes.
Performance was particularly strong in core subjects, including 74% of students securing a good pass in both English and Maths, with more than half achieving a strong pass in both subjects 56% and 100% achieving grade 5+ in all three separate sciences.
Congratulations go to all of our students and their families on these results. St Bonaventure's is also looking forward to welcoming many of the Year 11 cohort back in September as they continue their education in the school's very popular 6th Form.
Over a third of GCSE grades overall were 7 and above - a significant rise on 2025 but also above 2024. Two thirds of all GCSE grades were a strong pass (5) or higher. Nearly 80% of all GCSEs were above Grade 4 (standard pass). Virtually every GCSE entry resulted in a graded qualification. 8 students got 5 or more Grade 9s, demonstrating some excellent individual performances.

For students, today's results day marked the end of an important chapter and the start of the next one. Among this year's individual successes, Dominik was one of our top-achieving students with a remarkable ten grade 9s and an impressive full mark in English Literature, said: "It feels amazing to be celebrating such great results today and to see how far I have come since I first joined St Bonaventure's in Year 7. I have had so many great experiences here, and want to thank all the teachers and staff who have supported me throughout my journey. Excited that my journey with St Bonaventure's will continue into the Sixth Form, and I'm looking forward to starting this next chapter."
Edward is another student who excelled with five grade 9s and three grades 8, and commented on his results: "I put a lot of work in, so it's a great feeling to see it pay off. I'm really grateful to my family, friends, and teachers for all the support they gave me during my GCSEs."
Abiodun achieved five grade 9s and four grade 8s and is looking forward to continuing his studies at St Bonaventure's 6th Form. "I'm happy with my results, particularly in maths. The teachers have believed in me throughout my time at St Bon's, and I'm looking forward to coming back in September and studying A Level in maths, further maths, and computer science."
Santhosh, who received 7 grade 9s and one grade 8, said: "I'm very proud of the fantastic results I have achieved today. There were definitely challenging moments throughout my GCSEs studies, but all the guidance from my teachers and family has made a huge difference. I'm very grateful to be part of St Bonaventure's community."
St Bonaventure's 6th Form remains one of the most sought-after destinations for post-16 education in Newham and beyond, receiving around 1,800 applications for just 185 places for the third consecutive year. Its strong academic record continues to open

Students, families and staff gathered to celebrate the this year's excellent GCSE results at St Benedict's School St Benedict's School is proud to celebrate the achievements of its Year 11 students, who have secured a strong set of GCSE results following another year of hard work, commitment and determination.
Almost half of all grades awarded were at the highest levels of 9 and 8, with 66% of grades awarded at 9-7. These results reflect the breadth of academic achievement across the year group and the dedication of both students and staff.

New Hall School, Chelmsford
New Hall School in Chelmsford is celebrating another year of outstanding GCSE results. On Thursday morning, Year 11 students gathered with teachers, friends and family to receive the grades that mark an important milestone in their academic journey. This year, a record 93% of all grades are at 5-9 (A*-B), with 58% of all grades at 7-9 (A*/A) and 36% of all grades at 8+ (A*). 15% of all grades are at the top grade 9.
Principal, Mrs Katherine Jeffrey, who this year celebrates 25 years of headship and is the longest serving Head in New Hall's history, and the longest serving Head in the HMC, said: "It has been a wonderful day of celebration for our Year 11 students. We are delighted to see so many of our students secure the highest grades. We are also proud that our distinctive diamond model, where students are taught in single sex lessons from the ages of 11-16, continues to buck national trends by challenging gender stereotypes in subject choices and attainment. These exceptional outcomes reflect our students' commitment throughout their time at New Hall. We look forward to supporting them as they take the next step in their educational journey."
Building on the particularly strong results across STEM subjects at A Level this year, students excelled in STEM subjects at GCSE, with 74% of Chemistry grades at 7+ (A*/A), 66% of Biology grades at 7+ (A*/A) and 62% of Physics grades at 7+ (A*/A). In Further Mathematics, over half of all grades from our second ever cohort were at 8+ (A*).
New Hall's top achiever, Francis Bisoni, alumnus from Holmwood House, achieved a clean sweep of 10 grade 9s. In addition to this, Francis achieved an A* in his Extended Project Qualification, which he completed two years early. Based on the success of his project, Francis represented New Hall at this year's Chelmsford Science and Engineering Society TEXPO competition held at Anglia Ruskin University. Francis won the Technical Design Award with his impressive homemade wind turbine power generator, capable of charging electronic devices using renewable energy.
Other students who have achieved an outstanding seven or more grade 9s include: Jack Healy, alumnus from Widford Lodge Preparatory School, who achieved nine grade 9s, and two grade 8s; Harry Pitt, boarder and alumnus from Widford Lodge Preparatory School, who achieved nine grades 9s, one grade 8 and a B in his Higher Project Qualification; Alice Higgins, alumna from Elm Green Preparatory School, who achieved eight grade 9s, three grade 8s and an A* in her Higher Project Qualification; and Phoenix Wilkins, alumna from New Hall Prep, who achieved seven grade 9s, two grade 8s and three grade 7s.
Vice Principal, Dr Paul Tiffen, said: "We are immensely proud and delighted to see our students' hard work and determination reflected in these outstanding results. This cohort has not only excelled academically, they have also embraced the full breadth of life at New Hall, excelling in sport, debating, the performing arts, leadership roles and volunteering. New Hall's flourishing Classics Department is celebrating another year of outstanding results at GCSE, with 65% of all grades across Classics at 7+ (A*/A) and 80% of grades in Classical Greek at 8+ (A*). New Hall has a longstanding record of students progressing to study Classics at the highest level, including outgoing Head Boy, Max Pietrzak, who last week secured his place to read Classics at St Hilda's College, Oxford. Max joins a distinguished cohort of Classics alumni (Old Fishes) currently studying at Oxford, including Romilly Ireland, who is reading History (Ancient & Modern) at Balliol College and Lawrencia Dwomoh, who is reading Classics and Middle Eastern & Asian Studies at Oriel College.
Aspiring Classicist, Ishani Vasireddy, alumna from Heathcote Preparatory School, will be studying Classical Greek, Latin, English Literature and Spanish A Levels at New Hall. This year, Ishani won the ISA National Public Speaking Competition at Cambridge University for an unprecedented third consecutive year. She is also a chorister in the Chamber Choir, regularly performing in prominent venues including New Hall's historic Chapel, Chelmsford Cathedral, Brentwood Cathedral, Westminster Cathedral and King's College Chapel, Cambridge.
As one of the UK's oldest Catholic schools, it is also fitting that the History Department has marked another exceptional year, with 84% of grades at 7+ (A*/A). New Hall's unique historical setting provides an inspiring backdrop for students of History. The School occupies the former Palace of Beaulieu, once home to King Henry VIII, and its rich heritage continues to capture international interest, most recently with the discovery of hidden Tudor tunnels and artefacts that were featured in a Time Team podcast. The results from New Hall's boarding students are outstanding, with 17% at the highest grade 9 and 40% of grades at 8+ (A*). St Paul's Academy, Greenwich
Students and staff at St. Paul's Academy in the Royal Borough of Greenwich are celebrating today following the release of the Class of 2026 GCSE results. The outcomes highlight strong student achievement, significant progress in core subjects, and the school's continuing journey of academic excellence.
This year's results demonstrate notable improvements in both English and Mathematics, reflecting the dedication of pupils, the hard work of teaching staff, and the impact of focused academic initiatives across the curriculum. Core English and Mathematics strong pass rates jumped by over nine percentage points.

Alongside overall cohort gains, individual success stories were celebrated across the year group:
Fortune Olatunde achieved an extraordinary total of nine Grade 9s (including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Further Maths, Maths, English Language, English Literature, and RS) alongside a Grade 7 in Spanish, earning an overall average grade score of 8.80. Fortune will be attending Eton College on a full scholarship starting this September. Reacting to his accomplishments, Fortune shared:
"I don't know what to say. I'm proud. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
Tolulope Oke secured six Grade 9s (Biology, Chemistry, Maths, PE, Physics, Religious Studies), three Grade 8s (English Language, English Literature, Spanish), and a Grade 7 in Astronomy, achieving an average grade of 8.50. Tolu shared her joy at achieving such excellent results: "I didn't think I'd get so many 9s, especially in maths. I'm excited, relieved, everything. I'm really happy. I'm pleased with my English results because that's something I used to struggle with."

Bishop Challoner Catholic School Tower Hamlets
Students and staff at Bishop Challoner Catholic School are celebrating a range of strong GCSE results and individual achievements.
Initial figures show that 75% of students achieved Grade 4 or above in English and 68% achieved Grade 4 or above in Mathematics. Overall, 63% of the cohort secured Grade 4 or above in both English and Mathematics, with 40% achieving Grade 5 or above in both subjects.
There were particular strengths at the higher grades, with a quarter of students securing Grade 7 or above in English. Separate Sciences and Computer Science also produced some very strong outcomes.
A number of students achieved exceptional individual results. Mohammed Ismail achieved ten GCSEs, including seven Grade 9s, while Neil Turakalov achieved ten GCSEs, including six Grade 9s. Tolulope Johnson achieved nine GCSEs, all at Grade 8 or above.
Adam Hall, Executive Headteacher, said: "Today is about recognising the hard work and determination of our students. There are some exceptional headline results, but behind these figures are many individual stories of progress, resilience and success.

Newman Catholic College in Harlesden is celebrating a wonderful year of growth in its GCSE results. Results were strong across the board, but some individual subject areas shone. In Modern Foreign Languages, over 30% of students achieved grade 9 in Spanish and more than 20% of students achieved grade 9 in French. Over 50% of students sitting Chemistry achieved a grade 7 or above, and 75% of students in RE achieved grade 5 or above.
Deputy Headteacher Maria Budzynska said, "Our Year 11 students have shown tremendous perseverance and maturity throughout their GCSE journey. They have embraced every opportunity to succeed, and these results are a fitting reward for their hard work. We are grateful to our staff and parents for their unwavering support and look forward to welcoming many of our students into the Sixth Form."
Chair of Governors Jane Hargrave added, "We are incredibly proud of the achievements of our students. These results reflect the values, ambition and sense of community that are at the heart of St John Bosco College."
Highlights from individual students include Jozy, with nine grade 9s, and Darina, with eight grade 9s. Divine, Elliot and Ethan achieved 23 grades 7-9 between them, while Aicha achieved five grades 7-9.
The students all spoke of their delight with their grades and their excitement for their Sixth Form courses at SJBC.
