Letter to Pope Leo from P Bear

It was intriguing to learn that a fellow "Peruvian" had been elected Pope in May this year. For a little while I pondered a particular "Paddington Bear" question. This prompted a letter to The Tablet asking whether Pope Leo would keep a marmalade sandwich under his mitre for emergencies?

I even sent the printed article to His Holiness in Rome but heard nothing in response to this vital question. There was nothing left but to go to Rome in person and see for myself.

I duly joined other pilgrims in St Peter's Square in the Saturday sunshine, in the hope that an answer might be forthcoming. After all, HM Queen Elizabeth II of blessed memory provided the answer to a similar question which I put to her in June 2022.

Sadly, this quest was to no avail, and I returned to London more than somewhat disconsolate…
