Seeking Sanctuary says: 'Let's stop demonising migrants'

The demonisation of migrants has reached new heights.
Already traumatised by persecution and conflict, young asylum seekers now live in fear of vigilante groups and hostility in their neighbourhoods. They are afraid to go out even though their meagre allowance of a few pounds a week will not get them far. The continuous calls of 'send back the illegals' do nothing to further understanding and tolerance. The calls to protect local girls just add to the febrile atmosphere.
Ben Bano of 'Seeking Sanctuary' commented: "We oppose any Council seeking to displace asylum seekers from their current residence in hotels.
Instead, while we await the provision of more suitable temporary accommodation, public education and supportive initiatives will help to quell the extremist narratives of some politicians who seek support for their views.
"There are many examples of local community groups and faith communities providing support to those placed in hotels, showing that humanitarian initiatives can promote understanding and tolerance at a local level. Some groups help to provide people with, essentials as well as offering hospitality in their homes."
"Let's stop the intolerance and demonisation and show how, through combatting these intolerant narratives, there is a better way forward."
'Seeking Sanctuary' aims to raise awareness about people displaced from their homes and to channel basic humanitarian assistance from Faith Communities and Community Organisations via partnerships with experienced aid workers. Our special concern is for the 2000 or so exiles who are stuck in north-western France, mistakenly expecting a welcome in the UK. They need food, water, good counsel and clothes, which are accepted, sorted and distributed by several organisations, including two Calais warehouses which also supply needs further afield.
