Season of Creation 2025: 'Peace with Creation'

  • Ellen Teague

The annual celebration of the Season of Creation invites the world's 2.6 billion Christians to prayer and action to protect Earth, our common home. The ecumenical Season runs from 1 September (World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation) to 4 October (Feast of St Francis of Assisi).

Christians are encouraged to organise prayer and practical initiatives to combat the environmental crises facing us, such as climate change and diminishing biodiversity. It is a time for individuals and churches to value and thank God for the gifts of Creation.

The theme this year is: 'Peace with Creation.' It highlights that natural ecosystems are destroyed by conflict and that wars divert political attention and financial resources away from environmental protection. In many countries, clean energy projects and conservation efforts are delayed or defunded as governments shift priorities toward military spending and crisis management.

Getting involved

The Season of Creation website has a wide variety of resources for individuals, groups and parishes. Materials available include a Celebration Guide that contains numerous ideas for activities such as prayer services, pilgrimages and walks, or organising educational and sustainability activities. A 'Season of Creation 2025: Catholic Liturgical Guide' covers the Sundays of the Season of Creation.

On 9 July, Pope Leo XlV celebrated the first 'Mass for the Care of Creation', with prayers that we will "lovingly care" for creation and "learn to live in harmony with all creatures". And his message for the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation on 1 September is 'Seeds of Peace and Hope.'

And many events are planned for the Season of Creation. On 2 October the Jesuit Church of the Immaculate Conception at Farm Street, in London is hosting a time of prayer and reflection to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the Canticle of the creatures of St Francis. On 4 September, at the same venue, the Conference of Religious has organised a workshop in London for Religious on the theme: 'Ecology and the Church'. The Columban missionaries have organised jointly with Salford's Laudato Si Centre a Jubilee Year Season of Creation Pilgrimage on 25 September with the theme 'Hope for Our Common Home', walking from the Laudato Si' Centre at Wardley Hall to Salford Cathedral.
