Laudato Si' Week 2025: Raising Hope with Bishop John Arnold

  • Ellen Teague

The Care of Creation Office of the Bishops' Conference of Scotland have invited Bishop John Arnold, Lead Bishop on the Environment of the Bishops' Conference of England and Wales, to share his thoughts on Celebrating the Jubilee Year and the 10th Anniversary of Laudato Si'.

Pope Francis' hope was that this Jubilee Year would 'contribute greatly to restoring a climate of hope and trust as a prelude to the renewal and rebirth that we so urgently desire'.

Do we sense a climate of hope and trust, or a world that appears increasingly divided with the Cry of the Poor and the Cry of the Earth being responded to with the 'globalised indifference' that Pope Francis spoke of at Lampedusa back in 2013.

In Laudato Si' Pope Francis stressed that the Cry of the Poor and the Cry of the Earth are linked. 'We are faced not with two separate crises, one environmental and the other social, but rather with one complex crisis which is both social and environmental'. [139]

This linking is reflected in the organisations that are co-badging the session: Eco-Congregation Scotland, Justice & Peace Scotland, Laudato Si' Movement, Open House Magazine, Pax Christi Scotland, Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund (SCIAF) and the Scottish Laity Network.
