London: Chance to see The Blues Brothers at Farm Street Film Club
The Blues Brothers is a 1980 American musical / action comedy which is also a tale of redemption with a Catholic back story, that has been praised by the Vatican. Paroled convict, Jake, and his brother, Elwood (played with vigour by John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd), set out on a 'mission from God' to prevent the closure of the Catholic orphanage in Chicago where they were both raised.
To achieve this, they must reunite their R&B band and organise a fund raiser to pay the orphanage tax bill. Along the way, while being relentlessly pursued by the police, they encounter various odd and sometimes musical characters and the film features great music by James Brown, Cab Calloway, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles and John Lee Hooker.
The film was noted by the National Film Registry as being 'culturally, historically and aesthetically significant'. Come and check this for yourselves!
The Blues Brothers will be showing at the Tim Hetherington Film Club in the Arrupe Hall, Farm Street, 114 Mount St W1K 3AH, at 6.30 for 7pm on Thursday 27 June. Cost: free - with drinks and refreshments (donations welcome)
