Christmas Messages from Pax Christi
Many of us will be wondering how we can celebrate Christmas this year when it seems there is no end to increasing war and violent conflict around the world. Hymns and songs (sacred and secular) that speak of 'peace on earth' and 'goodwill to all' ring hollow in the face of what we see and witness.
This is not the first year when that is the case, of course, nor will it be the last, but the terrible violence and the deaths of so many in the very land where Christ was born are a stark reminder of what is being suffered by others, while we experience relative peace and security and our celebration of Christmas could go on in ignorance of what is happening elsewhere.
The birth of Jesus, the 'Incarnation', is the ultimate identification with another. 'The Word became flesh and blood and moved into the neighbourhood' says the Message translation of the Bible in John 1. And what a neighbourhood that was, occupied by a violent army and riven with conflict.
