Events to mark 80th anniversary of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

This August it will be 80 years since the world's first atomic bombs were dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing as many as 200,000 people instantly and leaving many others to suffer from radiation sickness and cancer for years afterwards.

The threat that atomic weapons - much more powerful than the first ones - will one day be used again still hangs over the world today. Pax Christi, Christian CND and other groups will be holding prayers and vigils to recall the suffering of survivors and those who died and to work towards a world where these weapons no longer exist.
