A Catholic priest being treated for the Coronavirus died last Sunday after he gave his respirator to a younger patient.

Fr Giuseppe Berardelli, 72, died at a hospital in Lovere, Italy. A much-loved parish priest, Fr Giuseppe rode a motorbike. He was was known for his kindness and help for the poor.

Italian newspaper Araberara report that Fr Giuseppe's parishioners bought him the respirator but he asked for it to be given to a younger patient.

Fr James Martin SJ has tweeted: "He is a 'Martyr of Charity,' a saint like St Maximilian Kolbe, who in Auschwitz volunteered to take the place of a condemned man with a family, and was killed. Don Giuseppe Berardelli, patron of those who suffer from coronavirus and all who care for them, pray for us!"
