Sister Ita Keane, 74, a Sister of Mercy from St Mary's Convent in Hunters Hill, Handsworth, died hours after being hit by a black BMW on Friday afternoon as she crossed a road.

St Mary's Kinnoull Monastery and Retreat centre, in Perth posted on their Facebook page: "Please pray for the repose of Sr Ita Keane, a Sister of Mercy who died tragically in a car accident. Ita was a participant on the Autumn Sabbatical Course 2017. Our condolences and prayers to her family and Sisters. May she rest in peace."

Councillor Khalid Mahmood, of Perry Barr, Birmingham, paid tribute to Sr Ita, saying she was a "hard-working community member." He told BirminghamLive that Sister Ita worked tirelessly to help young children in the community, along with pupils at St Francis Catholic Primary School. He said: "She looked after local children and local people and also helped with the school next door... She will be hugely missed by the community. We have suffered a great loss."
