Church campaign urges government to rethink tax cuts for the wealthy

The Prime Minister announced today (Monday) that the Government will drop the cuts to disability benefits which were announced in last week's budget and prompted Iain Duncan Smith to resign as Minister for Work and Pensions. Church Action on Poverty (CAP) welcomes this news but say it would be deeply unfair if the £4 billion cut is simply shifted to other working-age benefits.

CAP says: "MPs are debating the Budget this week - this is our chance to make sure it doesn't widen the gap between rich and poor. MPs must call on the Chancellor to cancel the deeply unjust tax cuts for higher-earning tax-payers which also featured in the budget, rather than imposing further cuts to working-age benefits.

"Because of Iain Duncan Smith's dramatic resignation, MPs from across the political spectrum are now calling for a rethink. So it's a great time to call on your MP to speak out - even if they have previously seemed committed to the Government's programme of benefit cuts."

The campaign asks supporters tosend an email to your MP today or tomorrow, and make sure the debate focuses on unfair tax cuts rather than new benefit cuts!
