YES or NO: Trident has got to go
Following the historic Referendum vote, a network of more than 30 peace groups in Scotland will gather at noon tomorrow at the gates of the Faslane Naval Base, where the UK's Trident nuclear weapons carrying submarines are docked, to call for their complete disarmament.
Brian Larkin, Coordinator of Edinburgh Peace and Justice Centre and a member of SPN member group Trident Ploughshares said: "The Independence Referendum was a huge opportunity to get rid of Trident and put an end to the reliance on nuclear weapons for our security. But the historic vote of 1.6 million Scots to leave the UK opens up the question of the replacement of Trident in the run up to the next general election UK wide. Our message tomorrow from Faslane will be: Don't mourn, organise. This will be the beginning of a resurgence of campaigning UK wide against the replacement of Trident."
Rev David Maclachan, Minister of Langside Parish Church in Glasgow and Chair of SPN member group SCANA (Scottish Christians Against Nuclear Arms) said "Millions of Scots, whether they voted YES or NO want rid of Trident - one thing remains clear. The campaign against nuclear weapons will not stop until Trident is removed, and nothing will make that clearer than our presence at Faslane a mere two days after the vote."
A picnic will follow the demonstration after 2pm.
