London: Conference at Heythrop to explore translation of Bible

The Signs of the Times, a conference exploring the translation of the Bible and other texts will take place at Heythrop College, London University on Monday 9 and Tuesday 10 September.

Presentations on the Monday will be given by Charlotte Naylor Davis from Heythrop on 'Translator as creator of a text'; Marthe Kerkwijk from Heythrop on 'Language and the Translatability of Texts, a Pragmatist Perspective'; Nicholas King SJ from Oxford University on: 'Why translations fail: reflections on English translations of the Missale Romanum'; Martin Poulsom SDB on Edward Schillebeeckx and the meaning of scripture'. After dinner and a discussion, John Barton from Oxford University, will give the last talk on: 'Bible translation: style, historical context, and the ubiquitous presence of the King James Version.'

On the second day, Joe Norton will begin with a lecture on: 'The role of formal languages in computing and the relationship between humans and computer hardware'; Jon Riding from Oxford Brookes University will speak on 'Computer based tools for Bible translators: Progress, pitfalls and implications for the future'; Matthew Kimberley from Oxford University will speak on: 'Capturing the cultural: translation as an act of cultural interpretation'. After lunch James K Aitken from Cambridge University will discuss: 'Lessons for modern translation theory from Aquila and other odd ancient predecessors'; Mark Scarlata from Cambridge University will speak on: 'Accuracy and intention: translating divine descent language in the book of Exodus' and Jonathan Norton will talk on: 'Flavius Josephus’ conception of translation'.

The conference will conclude with responses from Marthe Kerkwijk and Charlotte Naylor Davis and closing words from Jonathan Norton.
