First female student to win organ scholarship at Oxford college

A student from Stonyhurst College in Lancashire has become the first woman to be offered an organ scholarship at St Peters, Oxford. Mary Ann Wootton will be reading Music. She is one of four sixth formers from Stonyhurst to be offered a place at Oxford University. Alice Grout Smith has an offer to read Chemistry at Hertford College, and Joe Bell has a place to read Bio-chemistry at St Catherine’s College. Catriona Graffius (not pictured) has an unconditional offer to read English at Christ Church.

The Headmaster of the Jesuit boarding and day school, Mr Andrew Johnson, said: “They have done extremely well, in the face of very tough competition. Congratulations to all four of them, and to their teachers, who have done so much to support their preparation for Oxbridge interviews.”
