News that Professor Ian Wilmut has been granted the second UK human cloning licence has been greeted with disappointment by Comment on Reproductive Ethics (CORE). A spokesperson said: " What a sad and extraordinary volte face for the pioneer of animal cloning. Wilmut has always been the loudest voice in recent years warning of the dangers of mammalian cloning. And we remember how in the years following the birth of Dolly the Sheep, he assured the world he would never go near human cloning. "CORE expresses deep disappointment that such a reputable UK scientist as Professor Wilmut has succumbed to the temptations of the biotechnology industry. "Human cloning remains dangerous, undesirable and unnecessary. Alternative therapies and research with adult and umbilical cord blood stem cells are already providing safe and ethical solutions in this field of medicine." Source: CORE
