At that time: Jesus said to his disciples, 'You are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brothers and sisters. And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven. Neither be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Christ. The greatest among you shall be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.'

Reflection on the painting

Saint Augustine of Hippo (354-430) is one of the towering figures of Christian history. Born in what is now Algeria, he possessed a brilliant mind but spent many years searching for truth in the wrong places. He pursued success, pleasure and philosophy, and for almost a decade followed the Manichaean religion, yet his heart remained unsatisfied. His faithful mother, Saint Monica (who we celebrated yesterday), never stopped praying for him. Eventually, through her perseverance and the preaching of Saint Ambrose in Milan, Augustine experienced a profound conversion. He was baptised at the Easter Vigil of 387 and would later write the famous words: "Our hearts are restless until they rest in You." Those words continue to speak to us today.

Augustine returned to North Africa, gave away his possessions and devoted himself to prayer, study and the service of the Church. As Bishop of Hippo for thirty-five years, he became one of Christianity's greatest teachers. His Confessions remains one of the world's most moving spiritual autobiographies, while The City of God shaped Christian thought for centuries. Declared a Doctor of the Church, Augustine reminds us that no one is beyond God's mercy.

Our beautiful Flemish painting, executed around 1490, gathers five key moments from the saint's life into a single image. At its centre Augustine is consecrated Bishop of Hippo, surrounded by richly dressed clergy. The artist delights in the beauty of the liturgy, carefully painting the vestments, croziers, incense vessels and altar furnishings, reminding us that the worship of God is itself something beautiful.

The four smaller scenes around the central event tell the rest of Augustine's story. In the upper left he is ordained a priest. Below, he preaches with great conviction while his mother, Saint Monica, is shown listening prayerfully, a touching reminder that her years of patient intercession bore extraordinary fruit. In the upper right we see one of the best-loved legends about Augustine. While reflecting on the mystery of the Holy Trinity, he meets a child on the seashore trying to pour the entire sea into a small hole in the sand. When Augustine points out that this is impossible, the child replies that it is no more impossible than for the human mind to comprehend fully the mystery of the Trinity. Finally, in the lower right, Augustine continues teaching and discussing the faith with those gathered around him.
