On Saturday, Pope Leo visited Acerra, in the Italian Campania region's territory known as 'The Land of Fires' - (because of a number of lethal fires caused by toxic waste dumping) The Pope's visit consisted of two main events during which he met with the clergy, the laity and thousands of citizens who lined the streets to welcome him and thank him for his closeness and concern.
In the Cathedral of Acerra, the Pope met with clergy and families of victims of environmental pollution. He said he came to offer closeness to those mourning loved ones killed by pollution, condemning the criminal interests and indifference that have compromised the local ecosystem.
Following that meeting, the Pope travelled through the streets of Acerra in the popemobile, reaching out to greet local residents who thronged the itinerary and showered him with gifts and gratitude.
He arrived at Piazza Nicola Calipari for a second event with the broader public and civic leaders, reiterating his belief that the common good must come before private profit, and encouraging the community to work together toward renewal.
