Israel passes law to evict community in West Bank

Rev Richard Sewell, Dean of St George's College, Jerusalem writes:
Extremely serious developments are on the near horizon. Israel has passed the necessary law in the Knesset to forcibly displace a very long established Bedouin community in the Occupied West Bank, in the highly contentious E1 area on the outskirts of Jerusalem.
On June 1 Israel is opening the process for tenders to build new settlements in this same E1 area. This has been a flashpoint between Israel and European and other governments for many years. This process demonstrates Israel's intention to kill the prospect once and for all of a viable Palestinian state.
The strong and clear statement from nine countries opposing these developments is important. I have to believe that it is a clear threat that if this goes forward long-threatened but never-yet-enacted serious consequences will follow. If it does not, it will be the clearest statement yet that Palestinians have been utterly and finally abandoned and must fight for their survival alone.
