London: Nicaea at 1,700: Calendar and Christology

The Society of Saint John Chrysostom will be holding an evening of liturgy, discussion, and conviviality at the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Cathedral of the Holy Family of London on Tuesday 25th November, to celebrate Nicæa at 1,700 years.

The event explores the legacy of the First Ecumenical Council in the light of the historic meeting between Pope Leo XIV and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in Nicæa later that week. Under the slogan of 'One Lord, one faith, one baptism', the two patriarchs will meet for an ecumenical prayer gathering at the archæological site of the Basilica of Saint Neophytos, where the Council may have convened in 325. A joint declaration will then be signed in Constantinople.

The event will begin at 6.15pm with the Divine Liturgy, celebrated in Ukrainian and English, followed about an hour later by talks and discussion on the two principal decisions of the Council: Christ's nature and the date on which his Pascha is to be celebrated.

Leading the talk on Christology will be Father Michael Lambros of St Mary & St George Coptic Orthodox Church in East London, while Comminications Director Paul Nizinskyj will give a talk on the origins and possible future of the date of Easter/Pascha, a version of which was published in the May 2025 edition of The Catholic Herald.

All will then be invited for refreshments at about 8.30pm. To allow us to cater adequately, please register your intention to attend, through our Facebook event page or via email at: contact@ssjc.uk. There is no entrance fee for the event but we suggest a £10 donation to help cover the cost of refreshments.
