Southwark: Mass of Thanksgiving for St Oscar Romero

Source: Stephen Davies

A Mass of Thanksgiving will be celebrated on 1 November to mark a very special double anniversary celebration.

This year, 2025, marks 20 years of the work of the Archbishop Romero Trust and 10 years since the creation of the Oscar Romero Award Trust for schools. To celebrate, the Mass of Thanksgiving will be celebrated by Archbishop John Wilson at St George's Cathedral, Southwark, the national shrine to Saint Oscar Romero.

Archbishop Romero was a deeply spiritual man who loved those living in poverty, defended them with apostolic courage, and gave his life for them.

The Archbishop Romero Trust was set up as a registered charity in 2005 to promote knowledge and awareness in the Church in Britain of his life and work. In 2005 we could not dare to dream that just ten years later Pope Francis would beatify Archbishop Romero as a martyr - and that his canonisation would follow in 2018. Around the world today Oscar Romero is an inspiration for countless Christians and others as a saint for justice, reconciliation and peace.

In 2015 his beatification saw the birth of the Oscar Romero Award Trust for Catholic Schools. The aim of the Award is to support schools to embed key principles of Catholic Social Teaching in their ethos and culture, so that all within the school and beyond can experience life to the full. St Romero is the inspiration behind the Award.

All are invited to celebrate and be inspired by the ongoing legacy of St Oscar Romero. For those unable to attend in person, the Mass will be live-streamed. You can find the link on the Romero Trust website.

Mass will be followed by refreshments in the Amigo Hall and an opportunity to celebrate the life and inspiration of Saint Oscar.
