Nuclear Abolition Day

Today is Nuclear Abolition Day - the International Day for the Total Abolition of Nuclear Weapons.

Declared by the UN General Assembly in 2013, the day has been commemorated every year since 2014. It is an annual opportunity for the the world community to reaffirm its commitment to global nuclear disarmament and it is a reminder to everyone of both the real benefits that would come from eliminating nuclear weapons and of the unacceptable social and economic costs of maintaining them.

This year Pax Christi has endorsed an international appeal calling on governments to use Nuclear Abolition Day to announce concrete plans to prevent nuclear war, shift nuclear weapons budgets and investments to strengthen the UN, advance peacekeeping and conflict resolution, accelerate steps to protect the climate, and meet human and economic needs. The time for the nuclear weapons states to act is now.
