The Laudato Si' Research Institute (LSRI) at Campion Hall, University of Oxford, is launching a new book, Laudate Deum: A Last Call for the Planet, at 2pm today, Tuesday, 17th June.

The launch is an online event open to everyone.

The book, which was edited by Prof Joshtrom Kureethadam SDB and Tobias Thornes and published by the Laudato Si' Research Institute in collaboration with Partnerships for Change, explores the legacy of Pope Francis' social teaching on ecology through his sixth apostolic exhortation, Laudate Deum ('Praise God'), published on 4 October 2023.

Laudate Deum serves as an urgent and prescriptive 'second part' to Pope Francis' encyclical, Laudato Si' (published in 2015), addressing the deepening climate crisis and its intersection with social and environmental injustice.

Speakers at the book launch will include Prof Celia Deane-Drummond (Laudato Si' Research Institute), Prof Joshtrom Kureethadam SDB (Pontifical Salesian University), Prof Veerabhadran Ramanathan (UC San Diego), and Dr Mary Evelyn Tucker (Yale University).

Books will be made available at the event and there will be an opportunity for Q&A at the end.

Fr Joshtrom, who coordinates the Sector on Ecology and Creation at the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, said:

"As Pope Francis has often said, 'We have inherited a garden from the Creator; we must not leave a desert to our children.' Laudate Deum is Pope Francis' testimony to his concern about 'the cry of the earth and of the poor' (Laudato Si', 49), as well as the growing climate anxiety experienced by our children and young people. He calls upon all of us to act decisively before it is too late."

Indeed, this event comes at a critical moment. As biodiversity declines, extreme weather intensifies, and international negotiations falter, scholars at the Laudato Si' Research Institute continue to provide rigorous and faith-informed contributions to climate policy.
