Sir James MacMillan composes new work for Grenfell Tower anniversary

All Saints Schola Cantorum
A new choral work by Sir James MacMillan will be premiered at Westminster Cathedral on 13 June 2025 at 2pm, as part of a special Memorial Mass marking the eighth anniversary of the Grenfell Tower tragedy.
Commissioned by All Saints Catholic College in Ladbroke Grove-an inner-city London school located in the shadow of Grenfell Tower-the communion motet is a poignant setting of 'In Paradisum' from the Requiem Mass. Rooted in Gregorian chant traditions, the piece gently echoes the melodic contours of 'O When the Saints', a subtle tribute to the school's acclaimed choir, the All Saints Schola Cantorum.
The Memorial Mass on 13 June 2025 will remember the lives lost and honour the resilience of the Grenfell community, many of whom are directly connected to the school. Several students and families from All Saints Catholic College lived in the tower, and the tragedy remains a defining part of the school's shared experience and mission.
Founded in 2021 under the leadership of Headteacher Andrew O'Neill, the All Saints Schola Cantorum is rapidly gaining recognition as a model for what is possible in state school music education. Rehearsing every weekday morning and supported by individually funded vocal tuition through scholarships, the choir is open to all students by audition and reflects the school's rich cultural diversity.
All Saints Catholic College, rated Outstanding by Ofsted, serves a vibrant and often under-resourced community, with 40% of students eligible for free school meals.
Against this backdrop, the school's commitment to excellence-both academically and musically-continues to defy expectations.
Sir James MacMillan's contribution not only offers a deeply moving musical tribute but also affirms the transformative power of music in healing, remembrance, and community.
