London: Grenfell fire anniversary - prayers, vigils and services


Today marks the second anniversary of the Grenfell fire in north Kensington, in which 72 people lost their lives. Many people who survived tower block inferno are still living in temporary B&B or hotel accommodation.

that Last night there was a special Mass at St Francis of Assisi Church in Pottery Lane to pray for the victims and survivors. Later in the evening at 11.30pm residents held community vigil outside the Kensington leisure centre beside the Tower. Notting Hill Methodist Church remained open for between midnight and 2am. The Space in Freston Road was also open from 5pm until midnight for people wanting a moment of quiet reflection.

Today, June 14, the anniversary of the disaster itself, St Clements Church in Threadgold Street is hosting a prayer vigil from 7am to 6pm, with a service at 6pm, followed by the tolling of the bell for the 72 people who died.

Humanity for Grenfell is hosting a remembrance service at 11am. Afterwards doves and balloons will be released and the congregation will then walk to the Tower for a wreath-laying ceremony.

At the Muslim Cultural Heritage Centre and Al-Manaar Mosque in Acklam Road worshippers will join in special prayers during Friday prayers at 1.15pm to remember friends and family and support survivors.

The Sikh Central Gurdwara is providing free food for the community at the gardens of St Clement James Centre in Sirdar Road from 4.45pm to 5.45pm.

Kensington and Chelsea Council staff are holding their own commemoration at the Town Hall in Hornton Street. The Mayor Will Pascall will join staff in the 72 seconds silence in memory of the people who died in the fire.

The Curve on Bard Road will be open from 10am to 6pm for residents and will offer refreshments, crafts and prayer.
