Podcast: 'Recharging the Batteries of Social Justice'
This week's episode of the All Kinds of Catholic podcast features the voices of delegates attending the recent National Justice & Peace Network (NJPN) Conference. Listeners will get an inside view of this annual event which draws together Catholics and people from other Christian denominations, who are motivated by their faith to work for social justice and peace.
Podcast host, Theresa Alessandro, spoke with a number of delegates about why they were there and what they value about the conference. One said: "For me, one of the best things is the community and the opportunity to meet new people, and we all want the same thing, but we've all had completely different life experiences."
In the light of the recent prison sentences handed to Just Stop Oil activists, one young adult delegate gave a thoughtful response when Theresa asked about her experience attending protests as part of the Columbans' work on climate change. She said: "One of the important things is making it accessible for people and the important messages aren't getting lost in the dramatics of it and that if your everyday person is able to understand the reasons for why we're protesting and able to join us as well."
Catholic Social Teaching featured strongly at the conference as well as in conversations in the podcast episode. While some mentioned the importance of Pope Francis' encyclicals Laudato Si' and Fratelli Tutti, one man reported how his social action journey began with a discussion of the much earlier encyclical Rerum Novarum, back when he was 17 years old in the 1950s.
The podcast episode is called 'Recharging the Batteries of Social Justice'. Listen wherever you get your podcasts, and online HERE.
