St Bonaventure's School, an Outstanding secondary school in Newham, proudly announces that three students have been honoured at the 2024 Brentwood Catholic Schools Citizenship Awards in St Helen's Cathedral by Bishop Alan Williams, Bishop of Brentwood.

The three students from different year groups have been recognised for displaying outstanding awareness of good citizenship and contributions to the community.

The first winner is Nevin, a Year 8 student, who lives out the seven cherished virtues of St Bonaventure's. Loyal, dependable and considerate, he is blessed with a positive attitude which rubs off on all those he meets. He sees the good in everything and everyone. Never shy of any opportunity to develop his faith, Nevin was alone in asking if he could attend a series of staff Lenten lunchtime reflections on St Bonaventure's life and teachings. He is also a passionate altar server, always ready to step in at school Masses.

Mohanant, a remarkable Year 10 student, is a well-rounded individual determined to make his mark on society and do good in the world. He is always the first to show compassion and consideration for others, particularly those students in similar situations to himself. The wonderful young man Mohanant has become is inspiring and this award is in recognition of his continued personal growth and development.

Year 12 student, Manisha, has shown irrepressible maturity and resilience, having had to uproot from Scotland and embark upon an entirely new system of education and acclimatise to London life in the process. One of the first to sign up for membership of the 6th Form CAFOD team on arrival at St Bonaventure's, she is a shining star with supreme energy and drive.

The community of St Bonaventure's is privileged to have kind, caring and humble students like Nevin, Mohanant, and Manisha at the school. Their actions and commitment to good citizenship are a testament to the values and virtues the school wants to instil in all the students so they can Live, Love, and Learn In The Presence of The Lord and become good individuals towards their families, friends, and the wider community.

Brentwood Catholic Schools Citizenship Awards

Catholic schools within the Diocese of Brentwood are invited to nominate pupils who have displayed outstanding awareness of good citizenship. Examples of previous award recipients include: Saving a life; Protecting an individual from injury or harm; Courage in the face of adversity; Resilience in battling illness; Bravery and peace in coping with the loss of a parent or sibling; Extraordinary care and kindness.

Recipients are presented with an award in St Helen's Cathedral Brentwood by Bishop Alan Williams, Bishop of Brentwood. The initiative was inspired by Lord Alton, a former pupil of this Diocese, and supported strongly by the Brentwood Religious Education Service to encourage schools to respond to Government requirements that Citizenship be included in the curriculum.
