Donkeys caught up in war

The war in Gaza has brought death and destruction on an unimaginable scale. and human suffering is incalculable. Donkeys and horses are also caught up in the conflict. Fuel is scarce, many vehicles destroyed, and the road network decimated. Donkeys and horses are now the main mode of transport - moving people and essentials through a war-ravaged landscape.

Safe Haven4Donkeys' lorry with animal aid, which was detained at the border since January, as reported by ICN on 26 March, has now been allowed through. An emergency team has been set up, administering free veterinary care and food. Animals are in a pitiful state - malnourished, dehydrated and suffering excruciating wounds from pulling heavy loads, as well as from shrapnel and explosive shards.

Whilst acutely aware of the immense human need the charity cannot stand by as animals suffer, not least when they could be helping the wider community in Gaza at a desperate time.

We want to provide long-term aid to donkeys and horses caught up in the war by ensuring the team on the ground continues their vital work with the only mobile veterinary clinic in Gaza. However, we urgently need to raise money to support a new team.

Working six days a week, we treat between 20 and 30 animals a day, and provide essential advice to owners to ensure better care of their animals.

The West Sussex-based charity has been working for 25 years in Israel and Palestine. Its patrons are: HRH Princess Alexandra, Hon Mrs Angus Ogilvie, Rt Hon the Earl of Stockton, Rt Hon Ann Widdecombe DSG, TV presenters Desmond Lynam OBE, and Kay Burley, and actors Peter Egan and Anthony Head.
