Christian Network Against Caste Discrimination online conversation
The CNACD (Christian Network Against Caste Discrimination) believe that it is vital that the issue of casteism is addressed as part of the Synod on Synodality.
Caste is an artificial hierarchy used around the world to rank people by their birth, and is generally associated with darkness of skin colour and ethnicity. Casteism exists in many countries including Yemen, Japan, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal and across South Asia. Given that those considered to be of the lowest castes will face the highest levels of poverty, it is an essential issue for the Church and especially for the Synod on Synodality. One well known example are the Dalits of South Asia. Though the majority are Catholic, many have left the Catholic Church due to poor treatment such as being required to use a separate door to enter their own parish. Those facing casteism are more likely to suffer from violence, sexual abuse and human trafficking.
For various reasons these voices are yet to be fully heard. The solidarity of Catholics, standing alongside our oppressed sisters and brothers is therefore much needed. We need the issue of casteism to reach the ears of Pope Francis and feature in the final synod report and be recognised as a significant issue.
The CNACD will be hosting a conversation online on Saturday 27 April at 2pm (UK time). We will share an update on developments to date and would greatly appreciate your participation and input on this important matter. A report from the meeting will then be shared with the relevant bodies.
