Christians stand with Gaza in worldwide demonstrations

  • Jo Siedlecka

Stop the massacre! End the siege! Ceasefire now! Those are the messages campaigners will be bringing to demonstrations and prayer vigils in cities and towns around the world this weekend.

More than 7,326 people in Gaza have now been killed in aerial attacks by Israel. Over 60 per cent of the victims have been women, children and babies. More than 18,000 civilians have been injured.

For the past two weeks, demonstrations and prayer services have been taking place around the world, appealing for a ceasefire, to enable emergency humanitarian aid to reach people in Gaza - who are living, and dying, in horrendous conditions - without water, food, medicines or electricity. At the time of writing, 42 per cent of housing in Gaza has now been destroyed. 31 mosques have been obliterated. Hospitals, schools and churches sheltering people have also been badly damaged.

Pope Francis declared Friday as a day of prayer and fasting for peace in the Holy Land. A special prayer service held at the Vatican was joined online by many thousands worldwide. Churches and communities around the world also gathered for prayer services.

In London last week, over 300,000 people took part in the biggest march for Palestine in UK history.

On Saturday, 28 October at 12pm, an even larger demonstration in London is planned. Campaigners of all faiths and none will be gathering at Victoria Embankment to demand an immediate ceasefire.

Christian groups will be gathering at the Embankment from 11am. Look out for our banners.
