London dioceses arrive in Portugal for World Youth Day

Hundreds of pilgrims from Southwark, Brentwood and Westminster Dioceses are arriving in Lisbon for World Youth Day 2023.

Among them is a Westminster group from Holy Apostles, Pimlico, led by Fr Patrick van der Vorst and James Doohan. I am with this group and we are staying in the parish of Santa Maria de Loures. We arrived here this afternoon and are already feeling at home. Further reports will be posted on ICN during the week.

Pope Francis will be arriving here on Wednesday. The motto chosen by Pope Francis for this World Youth Day is: "Mary arose and went with haste" (Lk 1:39).

This is the fourth time Pope Francis has presided at the global celebration, following the World Youth Days in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2013), Krakow, Poland (2016), and Panama City, Panama (2019).

The 38th World Youth Day was originally scheduled to take place in the Portuguese capital in 2022 but was postponed due to the health emergency caused by the Covid pandemic.
