Book: Welcoming The Stranger

  • Fr John Buckley

Welcoming The Stranger. by Denise Cottrell-Boyce. Publisher: Darton Longman & Todd.

" We are Easter people," Augustine said long ago, "and Alleluia is our song."

This is a very special time in our Catholic calendar. What is said above by Augustine is happening in parishes around the world. This is true where ever the Paschal Fire has been lit and the Baptismal Waters have been sprinkled. On all those who have been through the process of RCIA and consequently Baptised or Confirmed or received into the Catholic Church...the post Easter Joy reaches new heights in what is referred to as 'Mystagogy' where they now deepen their relationship with Christ in the living out of their lives.

They now through prayer and reading of Scriptures and discussion with the community consider what ministry they will develop in Christ. St Paul put the same challenge to the new converts in Galatians Ch 3v27: "All of you who have been baptised in Christ have put on Christ." That is what 'Mystagogy' means.

Put on Christ means person to person. I say all this because ' Welcoming The Stranger'....would be a marvellous aid at this time. I have written before how Virginia Moffatt has given us a treasure of catechesis in this series ' How the Bible Can Help Us Understand'. And the latest....' Welcoming The Stranger' is no exception. Denise Cottrell-Boyce has give us and inspiring study on the Commandment of loving our fellow human beings.

Those new Christians will love it and treasure it in shaping their ministry ...their living relationship in Christ. Denise has produced a work that is based on scripture...on her own family history and her work with refugees and homeless. She combines a variety of opinions of others from real life and literature and media.

Our new neophytes will, if they wish, find rich treasure in this slim but valuable volume. That is not all because every individual seeking truth-every prayer and scripture study group and those who will shortly be looking to Christ and Next Easter can look no further than 'Welcoming The Stranger'.

Wishing a Blessed Easter and Pentecost to all our readers.
