World Water Day appeal: Provide clean water through bore holes

Kenya and Malawi are suffering from a terrible drought. Tribal communities which rely on their herds of cattle and goats to live are experiencing near-famine, as rains have failed for the past two years and grazing lands are becoming virtual deserts.

The St Paul's the Apostle Missionary Community, which provides schools, medical care, nutrition, and agricultural projects, is working against the clock now to drill bore holes to ensure a safe supply of clean water to help communities adapt and thrive in the arid new conditions.

To mark World Water Day this Wednesday, New Ways, the London-based charity which supports the missions have launched a new campaign to support the drilling of bore holes.

At some sites they are also installing solar pumps which are the most sustainable and technologically advanced way to make the wells effective.

Access to clean drinking water is life-critical. These water projects save lives, sustain cattle - essential to the people's way of life, enable small agricultural projects to flourish, improve health and hygiene, and allow more girls to go to school rather than searching for water.

Director Angelia Docherty says: "Once each bore hole is set up, we will be able to use it to supply various needs of the community, which includes drinking water for a village (usually 2,500 people) as well as the nursery school and agricultural development. This is important because the semi-nomadic communities would otherwise need to set up their homes close to open water sources which can become contaminated. Access to water leads to many other benefits to the community including girls going to school because they no longer have to go out every day in search of water for their families."

Every £1 donated provides water for someone in need for 100 days in Turkana and over 1000 days in Malawi.
