Devon youngster raises funds for CAFOD in memory of his grandad

Even a nationwide lockdown couldn't dampen one ten-year-old's plan to fundraise for charity - all in honour of his grandad. Ryan, from Devon, had been planning a fundraising event following the death of his grandad this past November. Unfortunately, the coronavirus lockdown threatened to put a halt to his plans.
But, instead of being disheartened, Ryan, supported by his primary school, St Mary's Catholic in Buckfast, came up with a creative idea to organise an Easter raffle, selling tickets to his friends, family and neighbours.
So far, Ryan has raised nearly £1,000 for CAFOD. The charity is working to tackle the spread of coronavirus in some of the world's poorest and most vulnerable communities.
"My grandad was my best friend and someone who was very close to me," explained Ryan.
"He would often talk to me about charity and the amazing work it does helping people all over the world."
Ryan's mother, Lucy, added: "I am super proud of what Ryan has done and he was so pleased when I told him how his money will help so many families. I know my dad would be the proudest grandad."
During these difficult times, support like Ryan's is absolutely vital. CAFOD has now launched an emergency coronavirus appeal and is scaling up its support to local aid experts. These local experts are providing food to vulnerable families, as well as improving handwashing and sanitation facilities across communities.
CAFOD is also helping churches overseas to use their networks to share hygiene messages through Catholic radio stations, and to produce posters in local dialects on ways to keep safe and prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
