Film: The Breadwinner

The Breadwinner is an upcoming and thought provoking animated film by Cartoon Saloon. Directed by Nora Twomey and executive produced by Mimi Polk Gitlin and Angelina Jolie, it raises awareness on sensitive and political issues. It has received a nomination for Best Animated Feature at the 90th Academy Awards, and has received a Canadian Screen Award for Adapted Screenplay, due to it's ability to involve the reader in the plot and evoke strong emotions of anger, sympathy and an eagerness to make a difference in the life of others.
The film's main character is eleven year old Parvana who is living in Afghanistan under Taliban rule in 2001. After the unjust arrest of her disabled father, Parvana must help her family survive. She cuts off her hair and dresses as a boy in order to support her family.
Alongside her friend, Parvana discovers courage, bravery and a world of opportunities. Drawing strength from her stories, Parvana goes on a dangerous quest and ultimately risks her life in order to save her father.
A thought-provoking and emotional film full of encouragement to spread peace and love.
