London: Oratorio - The Childhood of Christ - Flight and Refuge
The Scherzo Ensemble will be performing an oratorio by Hector Berlioz: L'Enfance Du Christ, in French, (The Childhood of Christ), at three London venues next week: Tuesday, 12 December at The Oratory; Thursday 14 December in Holy Trinity, Rotherhithe; and on Saturday 16 December, in King's College.
The work tells a story of King Herod's persecution of the infants, the Holy Family's flight into Egypt and their being granted refuge in the home of an Egyptian family. Berlioz's interpretation of this traditional tale of familial sanctuary in Egypt is particularly resonant today, when Christianity is currently the world's most persecuted faith, particularly in the Middle East.
There is a wonderful cast, and the piece itself is a beautiful work, packed with poignant poetry and memorable tunes. The piece will be sung in French with English subtitles. The Narrator is Ben Smith. The Virgin Mary - Hannah Poulsom. Joseph - Edward Jowle. King Herod - Geoff Williams. The Father of the Family - Ossian Huckinson.
