A look at the Churches and corporate responsibility

The Ecumenical Council for Corporate Responsibility offers a monthly round-up of news from the Churches and other sources in the areas of economic justice, human rights and environmental sustainability.

The July/August edition provides information on 'Good Money Week' at the end of October, which focuses on ethical investment. "Your Faith, Your Finance" a joint venture between ECCR and Quaker Peace & Social Witness continues to provide a wide range of resource material exploring ethical and spiritual issues around the use of money.

Christian Aid has welcomed support by MPs from all parties for a new law to help curb multinational tax abuse across the world. It says that multinational companies cannot be allowed to hide their finances from public scrutiny any longer. The amendment to the Finance Bill was lost by only 22 votes.

ECCR corporate member TRAIDCRAFT says that a new survey carried out for its Justice Matters campaign reveals that more than two-thirds of MPs agree that a few irresponsible UK companies are undermining responsible businesses by their actions in the developing world. The General Assembly of the Church of Scotland has voted to divest from companies involved in the extraction and sale of coal and tar sands, but stopped short of divestment from all fossil fuels. A petition started by members of the Church's Youth Assembly calling for full divestment from fossil fuels was signed by nearly 3,000 people in just over three weeks.
