Britain's first Catholic literary festival
Britain's first Catholic literary festival next week will celebrate a proud heritage from Chesterton to Antonia Fraser, writes Bess Twiston Davies in The Times Faith page.
What is it about the imagination of the Catholic writer in Britain -- sometimes tortured and at others guided sublimely by the supernatural -- that has spawned a rich literary tradition, from Hillaire Belloc and GK Chesterton to Evelyn Waugh and Graham Greene and to present-day authors such as Lady Antonia Fraser and David Lodge?
The first Catholic literary festival in the UK, starting on Friday, will attempt to answer this question. Held over two days at Birmingham library, the festival speakers include the biographer Lady Antonia Fraser, the novelist David Lodge, the historian Eamon Duffy and the broadcaster Mark Lawson.
