It is with profound sadness and regret that Right To Life (RTL) announces the death of its founder, Phyllis Bowman DSG, who died on Monday 7th May 2012 aged 85 in Hammersmith Hospital. Phyllis passed peacefully, surrounded by her family including her husband Jerry, who survives her.

Phyllis founded RTL, Britain’s most prominent pro-life political lobbying group in 1999. She also founded The Right To Life Charitable Trust (RTLCT) in 2003 in order to provide financial and practical support for pregnant women in difficult circumstances, care for the sick and the elderly and to carry out educational work in our schools.

Ken Hargreaves MBE, ex MP for Hyndburn, Chairman of RTL and RTLCT, said: “I joined the pro life movement in 1969 as a result of encouragement from Phyllis Bowman. She was an inspiration to all involved, always leading by example and motivated by her love of God.

“No appeal from a girl in distress went unheeded because she understood that there are always two victims in every abortion, the mother as well as the unborn child.

“She campaigned fearlessly and took every opportunity to speak up for the sanctity of human life in the tireless work that she did, despite so often being in very poor health, and she had the total help and support of Jerry, her beloved husband.

“Phyllis' knowledge of all pro-life issues was as immense as her enthusiasm; she was instrumental in establishing RTLCT, through which our DVD "Little Stars" and written material have been sent to thousands of schools and praised and accepted by Head Teachers as being of great value.

“She raised (and gave) thousands of pounds to protect human life either from abortion or premature death. It is hard to imagine life without her.

“Phyllis will be greatly missed and in her memory we must redouble our efforts to amend the Abortion Act and prevent the introduction of euthanasia. The work of RTL will continue in honour of Phyllis and all that she stood for and worked so hard for. May she rest in peace.”

Trustee of RTLCT, Chris Whitehouse said: “Phyllis Bowman was one of the key foundation stones upon which the world pro-life movement was built. Her legacy is that despite the rising tide of the culture of death, hundreds of thousands are alive today who would otherwise have been slaughtered in the womb; and that the United Kingdom has to date resisted the introduction of euthanasia. She was a lantern of hope in the dark, and will continue to shine through the generations of young pro-lifers whom she inspired.”

Trustee of RTLCT, Rev Alan Rabjohns, said: “It has been a privilege to have worked alongside Phyllis Bowman for over 40 years. As well as her unflagging enthusiasm and determination in the fight she had a wonderful capacity to spot talents and abilities in other people and develop them for good. As a religious wrote in answer to my request for prayers: ‘A great campaigner for the beauty and dignity of life enters into the fullness of eternal life.”
